Purpose of the sub-programme
The Support Programme’s communication initiative provided support
to the EPWP Unit to formulate and implement a communication programme.
Work undertaken

Support focused on two areas, providing strategic
support to the EPWP Unit in developing and implementing their
communication strategy and support in implementing a recognition
programme which was called the Kamoso Awards.
Strategic support comprised assisting the EPWP Unit
to define the core message of the EPWP and in developing a
communications strategy. The Support Programme worked with the EPWP
Unit and also brought in communications specialists in this regard.
The core message and communications strategies formulated where then
refined and implemented by the Unit.
The Kamoso Awards were launched in the 2006/07
financial year to recognise excellence in the implementation of the
EPWP. The primary objectives of the Kamoso Awards are as follows:
- To mobilize government stakeholders and partners to increase
their efforts around implementing the EPWP.
- To communicate and showcase progress, impact and successes of
the EPWP nationally, as a key government programme.
- To use the Award event as a platform to enhance visibility of
the EPWP and reinforce its objectives to the broader public.
In the first year the Support Programme provided
joint funding with the EPWP Unit and was responsible for structuring
the basis by which the award programme was to be implemented. In
subsequent years the EPWP Unit took responsibility for implementation
with the Support Programme providing limited support. In the first
year the Awards was only for the Infrastructure Sector but in
subsequent years it was expanded to include all sectors.
The initiative was a combined effort between the
Support Programme and the EPWP Unit and has now become the official
awards programme of DPW.
Achievements

The Communication Initiative assisted the EPWP Unit
with the development of an overall communication strategy and
